The study of complexity associated with social science

COMPLEXITY SCIENCES

Complex systems are formed by many intertwined factors that shape a reality in which “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”.

Complexity sciences seek to understand the behaviour of these complex systems by using tools and concepts from fields as diverse as physics, sociology and/or economics.

These approaches allow explaining, for example, the behaviour of society or the economy on the basis of individual conduct.

Research

Computational Social Science: measurement of the agricultural activity impact on communication and migration processes in Senegal.

Models based on agents and game theory: analysis of cooperation between people and among society in general, in situations where it is possible to benefit from others’ effort without contributing to the common cause.

Complex networks: study of road congestion and the spread of epidemics through human networks.

Investigation of data related to human communication: information about where we are and what we say on social networks.

Complexity developes studies adapted to the specific needs of each company, is responsible for training professionals in the complex networks discipline, and offers products and software for analysis and monitoring. Dribia offers a quantitative innovation consulting service, that is, it helps companies improving their processes and services by means of data-driven tools. Kampal Data Solutions is a Universidad de Zaragoza spin-off specialized in knowledge extraction through the analysis of large volumes of data and the application of complex systems techniques.
